Company Manager

The Company Manager is the chief liaison between the Theater and the artists it employs, including actors, directors, and designers.  The individual is responsible for all communication with these artists before, during, and after their residency, as well as budgeting, planning and tracking all aspects travel and housing for the artists, overseeing payroll, and generally meeting the requirements and needs of the company throughout the season. The Company Manager must have exceptional management skills, knowledge of theatrical unions, excellent organizational abilities, effective interpersonal communication and proficiency in MSWord and Excel.

This position reports directly to the Production Manager and supervises volunteers and Contract personnel.  This is a salaried position, 40 hours per week and overtime as needed.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Planning/Budgeting

  • Long range planning of the improvement of guest artist housing facilities, equipment, and personnel with regard to Company Management. 

  • Investigating and pursuing ways that SIGNATURE can, through the use of donated or in-kind services, make the stay of our guest artists and the working environment for our resident staff more enjoyable.

  • Organizing and managing a cohesive annual budget and plan for all aspects of Visiting Artist Services.

  • Creating season housing charts and cleaning schedules for company housing.  This includes housing assignments for all out-of-town artists.

Communication

  • Understanding and communicating effectively the Artistic Vision of the Signature Theatre.

  • Orientation and sharing of information regarding the Theater and its surroundings, including all information relating to scheduling, safety and medical procedures, hospitality, and location of events.

  • Anticipating and responding to artist needs.

  • Maintaining a relationship with local doctors in order to quickly address actor illness. This includes selection of the correct doctors and processing their season subscriptions.

  • Serving as a signature for Complimentary and Half price ticket forms for all    artists.

Artist Housing

  • Arrange for apartment rentals and negotiate leases

  • Furnish apartments as needed

  • Arrange for cleaning and maintain artist housing during occupancy changeovers

  • Submit leases and pay schedules to the business office for rentals

  • Oversee payment of artist housing utilities

Travel

  • Communicate with out-of-town artists and arrange all air travel

  • Provide out-of-town artists with itineraries and information regarding the Theatre and the area

  • Greet artists at the airport on arrival and arrange for their return transportation to the airport

  • Arrange for rental cars and accompany artists to pick up cars

  • Make hotel reservations and check-in artists

  • Drive directors and designers from their hotel to the Theatre during casting visits and design meetings

  • Arrange for all actor shipping to and from the Theatre

Payroll

  • Coordinate actor pay with the business office by turning in timesheets and all necessary paperwork.

  • Distribute paychecks and reimbursements to all actors and other performance-related employees as needed.

Charge Scenic Artist/Props Craftsman

This position reports directly to the Technical Director and supervises Paint Intern (if available) and Overhire Paint personnel.  This is a salaried position, 40 hours per week and overtime as needed.

The Charge Scenic Artist/Props Craftsman is responsible for the texturing and painting of scenery, set pieces, and properties.  The Charge Scenic Artist/Props Craftsman acts as charge painter for all productions, unless directed otherwise. Additionally, the Charge Scenic Artist/Props Craftsman is responsible for the building, texturing and painting of props and set pieces as assigned.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in the artistic interpretation of all scenic design work and act as the primary aesthetic liaison between resident production staff and visiting designers and their assistants.

  • Assist the Technical Director and Properties Manager in the planning and scheduling of scenic and properties construction and painting. 

  • Maintain the organization and inventory of the paint shop, and work with the Technical Director to keep production expenses within budget.

  • Supervise the Paint Intern (if any) and job-in labor, and other members of the carpentry and properties staff as required.

  • Provide assistance and advice to the Education Department, the Annual Gala, and other theatre activities as directed by the Technical Director.

  • Provide technical information, labor estimates and samples to Technical Director and Production Manager for purposes of show and season budgeting and planning.

  • Other duties as assigned

REQUIRED TRAINING/EXPERIENCE:
A minimum of five (5) years experience in scenic painting. Proven ability in scenic painting techniques as demonstrated by portfolio and samples.  Proven ability in properties and scenic construction techniques.  Ability to communicate effectively with designers and Technical Director.  Ability to bid accurately and execute designs within a specific schedule.  Good communication skills and the ability to organize and direct crews.

Director of PR & Marketing

Signature Theatre, a non-profit professional theater dedicated to producing innovative musical theatre and the development of new musical and dramatic work, seeks a Director of PR & Marketing. Signature is renowned for combining Broadway-quality productions with an intimate playing space. In January 2007, Signature opened its new $16 million two-theater complex in the Shirlington Village area of Arlington, VA and has experienced tremendous audience and organizational growth since the opening.

Responsibilities: develop and implement marketing plans for subscriptions, single tickets, groups and special programs; develop and implement audience development initiatives; direct publicity and media relations efforts; cultivate media relationships; develop and execute direct mail/email campaigns; strategize and create print and radio advertising campaigns; oversee creation of website and print collateral content; track and report on the effectiveness of all marketing and PR efforts; develop annual sales income and expense budgets and maintain income and expense forecasts throughout the season; develop market research strategy; act as primary contact for research company and Resources Committee of the Board; analyze and report on campaign results; provide mentorship and supervision to staff of marketing/PR staff of four plus box office and front of house staff.  This position is part of Signature Theatre’s senior management and works closely with both the Artistic Director and Managing Director.

Requirements: BA; at least 5 years in a senior marketing position; proven direct marketing and advertising skills; strong knowledge of design and production for print and web; extensive experience working with media; expertise in market research and audience development; excellent budgeting, analysis and forecasting skills; strategic thinker. Candidate must possess excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills. Significant experience supervising staff required; arts background preferred. Salary commensurate with experience.

Grant Writer

Signature Theatre seeks a grant writer to assist in preparing grants and reports to corporate, foundation, government, and individual funders to support Signature’s productions and educational outreach programs. The candidate will work directly with Associate Director of Development to cultivate and solicit new and renewal grants. Responsibilities include grant writing, editing, and assembly, as well as preparing letters of inquiry. Other duties include researching new sources of support, timely reporting, maintaining accurate files, database records and grant calendar, and stewarding current corporate and foundation funders.

Skills: The ideal candidate will be a recent college graduate or have one year of experience, strong language skills, including the ability to write in a concise, compelling style. Nonprofit experience in the Arts preferred. Graphic Designer

Signature Theatre, a non-profit professional theater dedicated to producing innovative musical theatre and the development of new musical and dramatic work, seeks an  entry-level Graphic Designer to handle all in-house print and online materials, including publications, advertising and website design. Signature is renowned for combining Broadway-quality productions with an intimate playing space. In January 2007, Signature opened its new $16 million two-theater complex in the Shirlington Village area of Arlington, VA and has experienced tremendous audience and organizational growth since the opening.

Responsibilities include: design show programs; design collateral materials for productions including fliers and invitations; design display advertising; oversee and design website, e-news and e-blast promotions; design additional logos for special events and school productions; design student study guides; other projects as assigned. Knowledge of pre-press production and printing processes a plus. Degree in Advertising/Graphic Arts required with strong sense of typography, design and color.  This position reports to the Director of Marketing and Public Relations.

Executive Assistant

Responsibilities: maintain schedules internally and externally; handle phone calls; maintain and organize files; prepare presentation materials for Board meetings; coordinate Board committee meetings including scheduling, set up, and minutes; arrange travel and manage expenses; prepare and edit correspondence; greet and direct visitors to Signature’s administrative offices; handle special projects as assigned by the Directors.

Requirements: Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience required; experience as administrative assistant; strong independent decision-making and interpersonal skills; exceptional verbal and written communications skills, including proofreading and editing; excellent computer skills (excel, scheduling software, etc).
